Class levels:
Introductory Level – Zero years of training OR Brushing Up
The first step in classes for students who have never had a dance experience of any kind before. No knowledge of dance is required.
AND/OR
This class is for the student that has had dance as a child or has been away from dance for a while and wants a refresher class on the terminology and technique of a specific style of dance.
Students will usually take 1 – 4 consecutive 6 week sessions if they are brand new to dance and 1 – 2 consecutive 6 weeks sessions if they are doing a refresher to gain the comfort and knowledge to move to Beginning
The next level for students is to move into the Beginner Level I or Beginner Level and students are encouraged to take on both an Introductory Class and a Beginner Class to help with transition into the next level.
Beginning Level - Past Training within the last five years
These classes are suggested for students who have attended the intro levels classes, or who have taken dance classes within the past five years. Classes continue to work on terminology and technical execution. Classes move at a slow pace enabling students to gain knowledge and strength in execution of the dance steps.
Ballet Beginning Level 1 – This class teaches the same information as the other Beginner Classes but at a slower pace. A good transition class between Intro and Beginners.
Students are encouraged to take both Beginning and Beginning/Intermediate Level to help with the transition into the next level.
Beginning/Intermediate Level – Recent training of 1 – 3 years
Teachers assume students attending this class have the terminology however may still be working on the execution of the steps. The vocabulary is expanded and the class works at a faster pace. Combinations of steps will be longer and more complex than in the beginner level.
Open Level – 2 to 3 years of recent training
These classes are suggested for students who have at least two to three years of dance training and are made up of a mixture of students in differing levels, Beginning through Intermediate.
Intermediate Level – 3 to 5 years of recent training
classes are suggested for students who have at least three to five years of training.Introductory Level - The first step in classes for those students who have never had a dance experience of any kind before. No knowledge of dance is required. This class is also for the student that has had dance as a child or wants a refresher class on the terminology and technique of a specific style of dance.
Adults may start at any time during the year. Registration is conducted through our MindBody site. A link to our MindBody site is available above. HMD does not have a required uniform, but requests dance wear or exercise wear and appropriate shoes for classes.
Class Descriptions
Ballet:
Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology of varying styles from a team of knowledgeable ballet instructors. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of methods. As students’ progress through each level, the vocabulary is expanded and will become increasingly more complex and challenging.
Pointe: These Introductory/Beginning Level Classes focus on the basic exercises at the barre to strengthen the feet and legs to enable students to work on pointe. Once students begin to master the exercises, the feet and legs gain strength, then the students will move to center exercises. Students will be screened by the faculty for entry into these classes by taking Tuesday Beginning/Intermediate or Thursday Beginner with a recommended period of 3 months consistently taking these the ballet classes prior to being invited into the Pointe program. Once approved, Students are required to take the Tuesday Beg/Int Class or Thursday Beg Class prior to entering each pointe class. Students are not allowed to only come and take the pointe class.
Contemporary/ Post - Modern: Students will engage with the defining movement concepts of modern dance including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Students begin with a warm-up that combines floorwork and standing center exercises, focusing on skill-building with proper technique, musicality, and spinal articulation; followed by sequencing steps in the center and across the floor, as well as the development of improvisation and composition skills.
Jazz: Our jazz classes draw from a variety of historical and contemporary styles such as Broadway, commercial, funk, and classical. Jazz dance was born out of African dance, American tap dance, ballet, and theater, and is inherently related to the music that has evolved alongside it. Classes focus on syncopated rhythms, body isolations, and precision. Students will begin class with a warm-up, progress to across-the-floor exercises, and end with learning choreography.
Tap: Tap Dance is a percussive style that originated in the United States in the 1700’s. Using shoes with metal plates to create sound, students develop coordination, precision, rhythmic skills, and musicality. Our classes draw from both the Broadway and the contemporary Rhythm-Tap styles and begin with a foot isolating warm-up, followed by rhythm and step-based skill building in both the center of the room and moving across the floor.
