HMD’s Youth Dance program offers genre specific dance training necessary for more layered forms of dance study like Musical Theater and Contemporary dance forms. In addition to quality dance training in a variety of dance disciplines, HMD’s programs are designed to facilitate the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of each dancer. As students grow and mature, the discipline and vocabulary of specific techniques are introduced through positive and nurturing teaching methods. The program's structure allows students to train in three styles of dance; Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance.

The school year program runs August, 17th 2024 through May 17th 2025.

The full year program runs from August 17th 2024 through August 2nd 2025.

YOUTH DANCE PROGRAM (AGES 8 - 13)

Regardless of genre, dance, in and of itself, is an activity that requires consistency and dedication to excel at any level. Dance is a great way to make friends and learn about the world around you. It also makes a great high level extra curricular activity.

Our class schedule is set up so that multiple levels can be taught at the same time. Students are initially placed and their progress is constantly assessed. The stability of our class schedule allows students to be placed in the most appropriate class level and, when appropriate, moved into a new class level without requiring any schedule changes.

The program's structure allows students, according to their age and level, to train in three styles of dance; Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance.

Class Descriptions:

  • Ballet: Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of methods. As students progress through each level, the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. Classes will focus on helping students develop strength and flexibility.

  • Jazz: Students will learn the defining movement concepts of jazz dance including isolations of the body, grounded musicality, improving performance quality and developing a capacity for complex rhythms and movement patterns. Classes will focus on learning choreography helping students develop a greater sense of performance and movement memory.

  • Modern: Students will engage with the defining movement concepts of modern dance including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore contemporary dance practices, and processes through combinations and improvisation. Classes will focus on creative expression helping students develop their dance making skills.
